Flaxseed Meal: A Super Food! Flaxseed has so many powerful medicinal effects that the World Health Organization and the National Cancer Institute recognize it as a "super food" that is a beneficial addition to our Western diets. Good Fats The fats in Flaxseed (omega-3 fatty acids) have been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, high cholesterol and high triglycerides. It is widely recognized that our Western diet is lacking in omega-3 fatty acids. Since the most common cause of death in Americans is heart disease (and strokes), the ability of omega-3s to lower this risk is particularly important. How does it work? Flaxseed lowers blood pressure, dilates blood vessels, and improves blood vessel elasticity, which in turn increases blood flow. Phytohormones While plant hormones called lignans are also available in small amounts in plants such as barley, millet and oats, Flaxseed is the richest available source, with 75 to 800 times more than other plant foods! Lignans have antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-cancer properties. It is important to note that lignans are not present in high quantities in Flaxseed Oil. For this reason, whole ground Flaxseed is the best source. Anti-Inflammatory Effects A study reported in the Journal of Biological Chemistry found that the omega-3s in flax can decrease enzymes that break down cartilage around the joints, reduce factors that cause inflammation, and even help regulate genes involved in cartilage formation. Anti-Cancer Both omega 3s and lignans appear to have anti-cancer properties. Animal studies have demonstrated that omega-3s are able to decrease the size and number of tumors. One recent human study showed that Flaxseed shrinks breast cancer tumors. Part of the protection from breast cancer is thought to be due to the ability of lignans to regulate estrogen. Other Reported Benefits
Flax Phytoestrogens Nature's Richest Source Of Lignans Flaxseed provides 75 to 800 times more phytoestrogens called lignans than other plant food sources. Phytoestrogens are a diverse group of plant-derived compounds. Flaxseed contains especially high levels of a plant lignans called secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), which is converted by digestive-system bacteria into the mammalian lignans enterodiol and enterolactone. Lignans have been demonstrated to enhance the clearance of circulating estrogen. For reasons that are not yet clearly understood, this seems to provide a hormone-balancing effect for both men and women. Mammalian Lignans Production From Various Foods Food Group Mean Level of Lignans Flaxseed: 52,679 Dried seaweeds: 900 Other oil seeds: 638 Legumes: 562 Cereal brans: 486 Cereals: 359 Vegetables: 144 Fruits: 84 Benefits Animal studies and two human studies have presented strong evidence that Flaxseed Lignans have anti-cancer properties, particularly in cases of hormone-sensitive cancers such as those of the breast, endometrium and prostate. Flaxseed has also been shown to have a protective effect against colon cancer in rats. |

Do Flaxseed Oils Provide Lignans? No! Lignans are not removed from Flaxseed in the process of oil production. To get the full benefit of Flaxseed Lignans, whole ground Flaxseed is recommended. The Importance Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids Over the last century, the American diet has undergone changes resulting in a depletion of omega-3 fatty acids. Trans-fatty acids from hydrogenated oils have been introduced. Omega-6 fatty acids (found in grain-fed animal products and most vegetable oils) have become far more prominent while Omega-3s have become less so. Experts Agree: This imbalance in diet has led experts to recommend increasing omega-3 fatty acids, which are now known to:
Experts Recommend: There is no RDA for essential fatty acids in the US, but other countries have adopted recommendations. In 1995, a joint Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization (FAO/WHO) committee recommended an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of between 5:1 and 10:1. Since than, some medical experts have begun recommending a ratio closer to 3:1. The high level of alpha-linoleic acid in Flaxseed makes it am exceptionally good source of plant omega-3 fatty acids. A healthy ratio is especially important for pregnant and lactating women, and infants. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in Flaxseed is 3:1. In comparison, the ration for corn oil is 58:1.
